Beneath the surface, the manta ray moves with an almost impossible sense of ease. Its broad fins rise and fall like wings, allowing it to glide through the water without urgency or resistance.

It does not appear to fight against the current. Instead, it moves in harmony with it—calm, graceful and entirely free.

This quiet movement became the inspiration behind our Manta Ray Wooden Automata.

We wanted to capture the moment when a manta ray seems to leave the ocean floor and begin flying through an underwater sky. Its movement is powerful without being aggressive, and expressive without making a sound.

Every gentle motion carries a sense of balance, as though the creature has discovered how to move forward without disturbing the world around it.

For us, the manta ray represents a different kind of strength—not the strength of force, but the strength of remaining calm. It reminds us that progress does not always require struggle, and that freedom can sometimes be found by moving with change rather than constantly resisting it.

Inspired by the Ocean

The natural form of the manta ray was carefully translated into wood, with every curve designed to preserve its sense of fluidity.

From the sweeping outline of its wings to its extended tail and gently sculpted body, every detail was shaped to create the impression of movement—even when the piece is standing still.

Shaped by Natural Wood

The manta ray’s body is crafted from North American black walnut, selected for its deep natural tones and expressive wood grain. Its solid beechwood base creates a gentle visual contrast while providing a stable foundation for the mechanical structure.

A carefully controlled carbonization process deepens the surface tones and reveals the layered character of the wood. Rather than covering the material with artificial color, the process allows its natural texture and grain to remain visible.

Because no two pieces of wood share exactly the same grain, color variation or natural markings, every completed manta ray carries a character entirely its own.

Refined by Hand

Every component is carefully shaped and polished by hand. The curved wings, narrow edges and articulated sections require patience and precision, particularly where the natural wooden structure meets the internal mechanical system.

This handcrafted process gives the wood a smooth and warm touch while preserving the natural texture, tonal variation and distinctive character of the material.

Awakened Through Motion

When activated, the manta ray slowly comes to life. Its wings move in a continuous, flowing rhythm, recreating the graceful movement of a manta ray gliding through the ocean.

A precision metal cable-drive mechanism coordinates the articulated wooden sections, allowing the wings to rise and fall smoothly while maintaining quiet and stable operation.

The connection between wood and mechanics is intentionally visible, allowing you to appreciate how a series of carefully balanced components can transform solid wood into something that appears almost weightless.

Designed for Modern Living

Thoughtful modern features are discreetly integrated into the natural wooden form. A refined metal touch switch provides a simple and intuitive way to operate the piece.

The built-in rechargeable battery allows the automata to be displayed without remaining continuously connected to a power source, while the USB-C charging port makes everyday charging convenient.
