Across the open ocean, whales travel through distances almost impossible to imagine.

They rise toward the surface to breathe, disappear beneath the waves and continue their journey through a world guided by currents, sound and instinct.

Despite their immense size, their movement feels calm and effortless—as though the ocean itself is carrying them forward.

This contrast between quiet grace and hidden strength became the inspiration behind our Floating Whale Wooden Automata.

We wanted to capture a moment when a whale rises above a series of rolling waves. For a brief instant, its enormous body seems almost weightless, suspended between the ocean and the sky.

The whale does not appear to fight the water. Instead, it moves with the natural rhythm of the sea.

A Symbol of Calm Strength

For us, the whale represents calm strength, freedom and the courage to continue a long journey.

Its power does not need to be announced. It can be felt in the steady rhythm of its movement, in the patience of its migration and in the quiet confidence with which it travels through the ocean.

The whale reminds us that meaningful progress does not always happen quickly. Some journeys are shaped by persistence—one breath, one wave and one movement at a time.

Two Woods, One Living Form

The upgraded version combines North American black walnut and beechwood throughout the whale’s body.

The darker black walnut sections create depth and visual rhythm, while the lighter beechwood brings warmth and clarity to the overall form. Together, the two woods emphasize the whale’s segmented structure and make its movement easier to appreciate.

This contrast is not simply decorative. It reflects the relationship between light and shadow as a whale moves beneath the surface of the sea.

Because both woods retain their natural grain, every finished whale carries slightly different lines, tones and markings. No two pieces will ever appear completely identical.

Refined by Hand

Each wooden section is individually shaped and polished by hand. The curved body, fins, tail and layered waves all require careful attention so that the finished sculpture feels balanced from every angle.

The handcrafted process preserves the natural warmth of the wood while ensuring that every moving section can work together as part of a complete mechanical composition.

The Mechanical Heart Beneath the Waves

The greatest challenge of this piece is not immediately visible in the whale itself. It lies in the crankshaft beneath the waves.

This crankshaft is the mechanical heart of the automata. Its individual sections work together to translate rotational force into the coordinated movement of the whale and the surrounding waves.

The angle, spacing and position of every crank component must be precisely aligned. Even a very small deviation can interrupt the rhythm, create resistance or prevent the automata from operating correctly.

Individually Calibrated

Installing the crankshaft does not mean the work is complete. Every mechanism must be adjusted and tested repeatedly by hand.

Our craftspeople observe every movement, identify even the smallest irregularity and carefully fine-tune the position and angle of each crank component.

The process may involve repeated assembly, testing and readjustment. Only when the motion becomes smooth, continuous and properly balanced is the piece considered complete.

This individual calibration is what allows the solid wooden whale to appear light and alive above the waves.

Awakened Through Motion

When activated, the crankshaft begins to rotate and the entire scene gradually awakens. The whale moves in rhythm with the layered waves, creating the impression that it is travelling gently across the ocean.

The visible crankshaft is intentionally preserved as part of the design. Rather than concealing the mechanism, we allow the relationship between craftsmanship and motion to remain visible.

It invites the viewer to appreciate not only the beauty of the whale above, but also the precision and patience required beneath it.

The upgraded version replaces the traditional replaceable-battery design with a built-in rechargeable battery.

USB-C charging provides a more convenient and modern experience while keeping the display clean and free from unnecessary external components.
